The University of Nicosia invites applications for a part-time position as a Fabrication & Wood Lab Operator in the Department of Architecture Labs.
Qualifications:
Candidates should meet the following criteria:
- A Bachelor’s degree in architecture, design, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience in model making, product design, or similar areas.
- Proficiency in computer-controlled fabrication machinery, including laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers.
- Experience in using and managing traditional woodworking and metalworking tools, including hand tools, power tools, and heavier machinery.
- Experience with CAD software, preferably AutoCAD and/or Rhinoceros (Rhino).
- Fluency in English.
- Strong organizational skills, integrity, initiative, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Good physical condition to perform workshop duties effectively.
- Proven experience relevant to the position, particularly in fabrication, will be evaluated during the hiring process.
- Knowledge of health and safety standards relevant to workshop environments is required. Previous experience conducting health and safety inductions or trainings is an advantage.
Responsibilities:
The Fabrication & Wood Lab Operator will:
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of machinery in collaboration with the Fabrication and Wood Workshop Manager and student assistants.
- Conduct health and safety inductions for students and staff using the lab, ensuring adherence to established protocols.
- Provide training on safe equipment operation, covering both computer-controlled and traditional woodworking tools and machinery.
- Support faculty and students by assisting with fabrication processes and technical challenges.
- Operate and maintain equipment, including laser cutters, CNC routers, 3D printers, woodworking tools, and heavier machinery.
- Conduct routine maintenance of equipment and ensure proper cleaning and organization of the lab.
- Promote sustainable practices through recycling and reusing materials.
- Collaborate with students to experiment with innovative designs and create challenging forms, models, and constructions.
- Provide technical advice on materials, construction techniques, and fabrication technologies to help students create their models, products, or installations.
- Research and establish links with local material suppliers to introduce students to diverse material options.
- Supervise junior staff or laborers, if applicable.
- Handle administrative duties, including preparing reports and managing correspondence related to the lab. Supervising the work of laborers and/or other junior staff.
- Handling correspondence required for the promotion of his work and preparing relevant reports and reports.
- Performing work inside and outside the office related to his duties and the responsibilities of the Department or Branch of the University where he is assigned.
- Conducting research, collecting, recording, classifying, calculating and analysing statistics and other data.
Duties:
- Operating and maintaining digital manufacturing equipment (laser cutters, CNC routers, 3D printers, and 3D scanners) and woodworking equipment (hand tools, power tools, and heavier machinery).
- Conducting health and safety assessments and ensuring compliance with university policies and legal standards.
- Supporting the procurement and installation of lab equipment and managing upgrades, repairs, and documentation.
- Assisting in technology and market research for new tools and materials.
- Participating in inspections, maintenance, and quality control of facilities and equipment.
- Preparing technical documentation, specifications, and user manuals for lab equipment.
- Supporting the department’s educational and research activities related to the labs.
- Estimating budgets, preparing reports, and maintaining records of laboratory activities and expenses.
