Engineering Laboratory Assistant / Technician

The Engineering Laboratory Assistant/Technician supports the teaching, research, and operational activities of the Department of Engineering across the Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering programmes. The role involves preparing and maintaining laboratory spaces, ensuring equipment functionality and safety, and assisting students and academic staff during laboratory sessions and project work.

The technician is a key contributor to creating a safe, efficient, and hands‑on learning environment, enabling students to engage effectively with a wide range of engineering tools, instrumentation, and experimental setups.


Key Responsibilities


1. Laboratory Operation & Student Support

  • Assist students during laboratory sessions across Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering topics.
  • Support the safe and correct operation of lab equipment, tools, and instrumentation.
  • Provide guidance on the use of measurement tools, testing equipment, fabrication tools, and experimental systems.
  • Ensure adherence to departmental and University safety protocols, including mandatory PPE use.

2. Equipment Setup & Lab Preparation

  • Prepare laboratory spaces, materials, and equipment ahead of scheduled classes, workshops, and assessments.
  • Set up experiments, demonstrations, training rigs, instrumentation systems, and testing stations.
  • Support instructors in implementing lab exercises and developing lab manuals or SOPs.

3. Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Calibration

  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment across Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil labs.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, or software‑related issues in instruments or machinery.
  • Coordinate with external service providers for repairs, calibration, or inspections when required.
  • Maintain accurate equipment documentation, logs, and service records.

4. Safety, Compliance & Training

  • Enforce safety rules and maintain a safe instructional environment.
  • Conduct safety inductions and equipment‑specific training for students.
  • Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Support periodic laboratory safety audits and documentation.

5. Inventory & Resource Management

  • Monitor inventory of tools, instruments, consumables, raw materials, and spare parts.
  • Track stock levels and reorder supplies as needed to ensure uninterrupted lab operations.
  • Maintain organized storage systems and equipment check‑in/check‑out procedures.

Qualifications


Required

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related field).
  • Hands‑on experience with laboratory instrumentation, testing equipment, or workshop machinery.
  • Understanding of engineering measurement principles and lab safety standards.
  • Ability to support a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Preferred

  • Experience in an educational or training setting.
  • Familiarity with CAD software, data acquisition systems, or basic programming (e.g., MATLAB, LabVIEW, PLCs).
  • Experience with equipment maintenance, diagnostics, or calibration.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and engineering documentation.
